Are you the type of vacationer who likes to get in a little exercise? Maybe you start feeling a little guilty about all the extra calories you are consuming (unlimited soft serve ice cream? dessert at every meal? Mickey waffles? I could go on and on!). I have the perfect solution for you. And you won't even feel like your exercising!
Introducing the Castaway Cay 5K
Disney Cruise Line has it's own private island in the Bahamas called Castaway Cay. If you are lucky enough to have your cruise itinerary include a stop or two at Castaway Cay, you could join in on this fun little activity. It is casual, free, flat, and family friendly.
Not a runner? That's ok! You can walk. Don't be intimidated.
Since Covid, the Castaway Cay 5k is more of an unofficial event. You complete it on your own, at your own pace, with your own group (or by yourself). Check in at the bike rental shack and the Cast Members will show you on the map where to go. When you are done, you check back in at the same location and they give you an awesome medal.
The paved trail is clearly marked for 5k participants. There is an opportunity to climb up a tower, spot some fun items along the way, and take a detour past Serenity Bay to a private lookout. There are also water stations along the way to get a drink if you need it.
A couple tips...
- Start the race in the morning when you first get off on the island, especially if you are traveling in warmer months
- There are showers and changing rooms by the restrooms if you would like to use them after you complete the race
- Just do it! Even if you aren't a runner or someone who typically does races, grab your family, make some memories, and explore the island!
